What is Osteoporosis? The bones that make up your skeleton are active, living structures. They are composed of several different types of cells embedded in a hard framework primarily made of calcium and various proteins. Normally, the cells are constantly breaking down old bone and replacing it with new material, and more to break. Eventually bone mass decreases below the level required to support the body. Osteoporosis is an absolute decrease in total bone mass usually affecting postmenopausal women and the elderly. It is a disease that robs bone of their density and strength, making them thinner, soft and weak, and breakdown occurs faster than replacement. The most common cause is the natural process of aging, hormonal, lifestyle, nutrition and environmental factors. Osteoporosis affects approximately 35 to 50% of post-menopausal women, and mortality rates from hip, spine, and wrist fractures, run 15 to 30% (27,000 to 60,000). It also affects men, just at a later age and with less ferocity. Prevention at an early is the first line of defense against osteoporosis.
With bone loss, the outer shell of a bone becomes thinner and the interior becomes more porous. Normal bone is strong and flexible. Osteoporotic bone is weaker and subject to fracture. Risk Factors of Osteoporosis:· Some Risk Factors of Osteoporosis Include:
What is a Bone Density Test? A bone density test uses special Ultrasound to measure how much calcium and other bone minerals ( such as Magnesium, Zinc, Silica, …) are packed into a segment of bone. The higher your mineral content, the denser your bones are. And the denser your bones, the stronger they are and the less likely they are to break. Doctors use a bone density test to determine if you have, or are at risk of, osteoporosis. Another technology for testing bone density: Osteo Ultrasound (Completely Safe) A Bone Density( Osteo - Ultrasound) Test involves immersing your finger or forearm, allowing high frequency sound waves ( Completely Safe)) to pass through your bone. These sound waves are similar to those that monitor fetal development in pregnant women (very save). The test measures the density and quality of the bone in your body. Because it is portable and less expensive than other technologies, Osteo - Ultrasound has the potential to service rural and remote areas at a realistic cost. Osteo - Ultrasound technology is effective in estimating risk of fracture in postmenopausal women over 55, but is not sufficiently precise for follow-up to monitor treatment. Osteoporosis Canada recommends that individuals who receive ultrasound results indicating low bone density talk to their physicians about having a BMD test. Diagnostic services (Bone Density Tests) are provided in the Pacific Alternative Medical Clinic in North Vancouver, B.C.
